About gift certificate statuses

When creating gift certificates with the Gift Certificates feature, a gift certificate can have one of the following five statuses. Learn more about what each status indicates and why.

Pending

Once the gift certificate product is ordered, a pending gift certificate is created. A pending gift certificate cannot be redeemed and the gift certificate hasn't been generated.

Active

When the order containing the gift certificate product is moved to a paid order status, the gift certificate will generate and the gift certificate status will update to active. This status indicates the gift certificate is ready and can be redeemed at any time.

The gift certificate purchaser will receive an email and can log in to My Account > Gift Certificates to download the gift certificate PDF.

If a gift certificate recipient email was specified in the single-purpose gift certificate template or multi-purpose gift certificate template, an email containing the generated gift certificate PDF will also be sent to the recipient at this time. Active gift certificates may be partially or fully redeemed.

Redeemed

Once a gift certificate has been fully redeemed (i.e. there’s no remaining value), the status will change from “Active” to “Redeemed”. Partially redeemed gift certificates will stay in the "Active" gift certificate status.

Voided

Gift certificate can be voided to prevent the remaining gift certificate value from being used by a customer. A voided gift certificate cannot be redeemed further once it's voided.

Refunding an order doesn’t automatically update the gift certificate status from active to voided. You will need to ensure a gift certificate is voided when you've refunded the order where the gift certificate was purchased.

Expired

If you set an expiration date in the gift certificate template, then a gift certificate will expire automatically based on that date. An expired gift certificate cannot be redeemed. If no expiration date is set, the gift certificate expiration will be set to "Never".
